Gas Station Employee Shot Dead On South Side
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A gas station employee was shot to death in a robbery Saturday afternoon on the South Side.
The attendant -- identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as 31-year-old Jojo James -- was shot in the side during an armed robbery at the BP gas station in the 4300 block of South State Street, police said. Initially, the medical examiner's office had the victim identified as Jo Jo Gaines.
Paramedics initially took the man in serious to critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. James, of 4856 N. Ridgeway Ave., was pronounced dead at the hospital at 2:58 p.m. Saturday, the medical examiner's office said.
Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said officers were called to the gas station for a robbery-in-progress and found the man wounded. The medical examiner's office said James was shot multiple times.
The robbers fled with cash from the register and other items from the business, police said.
Detectives were hoping to retrieve surveillance video, police said.
Wentworth Area detectives are investigating.
