Gas Prices Drop In Time For Memorial Day
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The temperatures may be going up, but the gas prices are going down over Memorial Day weekend.
And it couldn't happen at a better time -- just as everyone is hitting the road for the holiday.
"It's supposed to be a great sunny weekend. It's supposed to be a sunny weekend at the pump," Patrick DeHaan of Gasbuddy.com says.
At an average $4.11 a gallon for regular, gas prices in Chicago are down 20 cents from this time last year, according to the Gasbuddy.
"Honestly, it still seems high to me because it's over $4 a gallon," driver Linda Liss tells CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez.
But she is headed out of town, anyway.
DeHaan says with airfare and hotel prices up, driving may just be the economical choice this weekend. It's all thanks to a big drop in the price of crude, a plentiful supply and the cleaner summer blend.
He says prices could drop below $4 a gallon.
"Especially when you go out of the city," DeHaan says.
Yet for some drivers, the drop just isn't big enough for them to hit the road.
The average cost of a gallon of regular nationwide is $3.67. Prices are down enough that a lot more people are expected to hit the road this year than last: some 30.7 million.
