Garza, Cubs Avoid Arbitration With 1-Year, $9.5 Million Deal
(CBS) The Cubs and pitcher Matt Garza avoided arbitration Friday by agreeing to a one-year deal worth $9.5 million. The settlement came just before the two sides were scheduled to go through the arbitration process.
Garza went 10-10 with a 3.32 ERA in 31 starts last season with the Cubs. He was especially good in the second half of the season with a 2.45 ERA after the All-Star break. His rate of 8.95 strikeouts per nine innings ranked seventh in the National League in 2011.
Garza has been the talk of trade rumors in the offseason. He has one more year of arbitration eligibility before becoming a free agent.
