Gary Teen Shot To Death In Struggle With Robbery Victim
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A Gary teen was shot and killed during a struggle over a gun he apparently pointed at a robbery victim Monday night, the Post-Tribune is reporting.
Marquise Stokes, 19, of the 500 block of Kentucky Street, was pronounced dead outside near the intersection of 7th Avenue and Connecticut Street about 10:30 p.m., a news release from the Lake County coroner said.
The 40-year-old intended robbery victim told police he was walking on Connecticut Street about 8:30 p.m. when two men walked up to him and one of them pointed a gun and asked, "What you got on you?" police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King.
Both suspects started going through his pockets when the victim tried to grab the gun. He and Stokes struggled and the gun discharged, striking Stokes. When police arrived, Stokes was dead. Police found a mask at the scene.
The victim and Stokes' 17-year-old accomplice were taken to the Public Safety Facility for questioning.
Stokes in the 31st homicide victim of the year, By this date last year, the city had recorded 21 violent deaths.
Detective Lorenzo Davis is investigating.
