Gary Teen Killed Running From Shooter
GARY, Ind. (CBS) -- An unarmed Glen Park teen was chased down the street, where he was shot and killed early Thursday.
Norman Eskew, 18, of the 5100 block of Jefferson Street, tried to run from the shooter, who shot the victim in the face and leg.
Residents in the 1100 block of Hamilton Place were awakened by the gunfire, but when they looked outside, didn't see anyone in the area.
Detective Cpl. James Nielsen said it did not appear Eskew was the victim of a robbery.
"He was the intended target," Nielsen said.
Residents in the 5800 block of East 13th Place called police to report hearing gunshots about 1:30 a.m.
As Cpl. Charles Turner and Patrolmen Brandon Gilden and Walter Collins arrived in the area, they found Eskew lying on the street, where he was pronounced dead at 3 a.m., a news release from the Lake County coroner's office states.
Nielsen said investigators have not determined how many suspects are involved or if the shooter was in a car or walking when he began firing at Eskew.
One house in the 1100 Hamilton Place was damaged by gunfire, police said.
Eskew is the 37th homicide victim this year. The total for 2011 was 35.
Anyone with information about the homicide may call Nielsen at 881-4754 or the Police Department's anonymous hot line at 1-866-274-6347.
