Fundraiser Highlights Sarcoidosis, Bernie Mac
CHICAGO (WBBM) - Chicago comedian Bernie Mac would have turned 53 on Tuesday and a fundraiser Saturday night at the Peninsula Hotel aims to celebrate him and a cause he cared about dearly.
Mac was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis in 1984. He devoted his last years to raising money and awareness to fight the auto immune disease before it contributed to his death two years ago.
Among his efforts was establishing the Bernie Mac Foundation, which is working to find a cure and educate people about Sarcoidosis which can inflame any organ and doesn't have a known cause.
Mac's daughter JeNiece McCullough is organizing the event at the Peninsula Hotel, which she promises to be a good time. It includes cocktails, dinner, an auction and comedy show.
Sharri Shepard of the View and Joe Torry, former host of Def Comedy Jam, are the emcees. Tickets start at 125 dollars and are available at berniemacfoundation.org
McCullough hopes to raise between $80,ooo and $100,000 which will go to Sarcoidosis research and education.
