Freight Train Derailment Stalls 2 Metra Lines
RIVER GROVE, Ill. (CBS) -- A set of wheels on a moving freight train car derailed Friday afternoon, disabling the train and causing delays on two Metra commuter rail lines.
At about 2:30 p.m., a set of wheels on a CN Railway freight car derailed near River Road and Franklin Avenue in northwest suburban River Grove, according to a railway spokesperson.
No other cars on the train derailed and no injuries were reported.
Crews were working to fix the wheels and set the car back on the tracks as of 3:30 p.m., the spokesperson said.
The disabled train was traveling on tracks also used by Metra and was causing 10-15 minute delays to all inbound and outbound North Central and Milwaukee West Line trains, spokeswoman Meg Reile said at 2:45 p.m.
The delays are likely last through the evening rush, she said.
"One of the tracks is blocked with the train and whatever damage occurred,'' according to Reile, who urged passengers to check the website before leaving work.
Metra's website service said outbound trains scheduled to stop at Galewood, Mars, Mont Clare and Elmwood Park will board and let off passengers at the pedestrian crossing at the station. Passengers should consult conductors as to which cars will be available for detraining.
A special alert was also issued for River Grove, where passengers who need to access the north parking lot or tnorth side of the station should detrain at Elmwood Park and board buses to take them to that location because access is blocked by the disabled train.
North Central Service trains with passengers for River Grove will make a special stop at Elmwood Park to allow customers to board buses.
