Freight Train Derailment Snarls Metra SouthWest Service Trains

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Service on Metra's Southwest Service between downtown and southwest suburban Manhattan was disrupted Thursday afternoon by the derailment of a freight train locomotive on the South Side.
Trains that are operating around the derailment are running more than 60 to 90 minutes late. Other trains have been canceled, including the No. 827, No. 831 and No. 834. (Latest updates here.)
Passengers are encouraged to take No. 825, the 5 p.m. departure, or No. 829, the 5:40 p.m. departure. Riders may want to consider taking the Rock Island Line or Heritage Corridor Line as an alternative, Metra said.
The Norfolk Southern Railroad locomotive derailed at about 41st and Root streets, according to Metra spokesman Michael Gillis.
Other early afternoon trains were also canceled.
The derailment is also blocking all train traffic for Norfolk Southern trains.
The commuter rail agency hoped to have trains running on schedule Friday morning.
