Freezer Malfunction Latest Problem For Kane County Morgue

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Kane County coroner says a broken freezer in the morgue is just the latest problem in his underfunded office.

It was on Thanksgiving when a deputy coroner discovered a freezer leaking and two bodies thawing in the Geneva morgue.

Coroner Rob Russell tells the Beacon News that a repair crew fixed the freezer the next day at a cost of $3,500.

Russell says it's just the latest sign of problems in an office he vowed to clean up after his election last year.

The freezer, he says, is 20 years old, bought from a Jimmy Johns restaurant.

He says under his longtime predecessor, the late Chuck West, the office was "grossly underfunded" with autopsies rarely performed and staffers underpaid.
