Fox: Bears 'Just Have To Get More Points, Plain And Simple'
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Six games into the season, a frustrating trend has become obvious for the Bears and coach John Fox: Their offense has been among the best in generating yards but remains the worst at turning those yards into points.
That trend again doomed the Bears against the Jaguars on Sunday, as Brian Hoyer threw for 302 yards, but the Bears managed only one touchdown in four trips to the red zone and blew a 13-point fourth-quarter lead to lose 17-16.
"We had plenty of opportunities," Fox told WBBM Newsradio's Josh Liss on Monday morning. "We're just that much away, but it's still very frustrating."
The Bears rank seventh in the NFL in total offense and fourth in passing yards per game but rank dead last in points per game at 16.8. Needless to say, that must improve if the Bears are to have any chance at reviving their season.
"I don't think you win your share of games in this league with 16 points, and we just have to get more points, plain and simple," Fox said.
Fox repeatedly has said he'll wait on making a decision on whether Hoyer will hold on to the starting job when Jay Cutler heals from a thumb injury. But it's unlikely he'll be forced to make that decision before the next game, as the Bears visit the Packers on Thursday night on a short week. There appears to be a "very, very slim chance" Cutler will be healthy by then, Fox said.
"It's not looking real promising in that department," he said.
