John Fox: 'All Our Signatures' Are On 17-15 Loss To Broncos
CHICAGO (CBS) -- There was plenty of blame to go around after the Bears' frustrating 17-15 loss to the Broncos at Soldier Field on Sunday, and coach John Fox wasn't singling out any one player or decision as the reason Chicago couldn't pull out a third straight win.
For Fox, it came down to a lack of execution.
"All our signatures are on it, so we all take responsibility," he told WBBM Newsradio's Josh Liss. "You know, as we glanced through the tape last night after the game, I think there's things we could have executed better, and in a close game that's usually the difference."
Fox wasn't about to second-guess the decision to run the ball on the Bears' failed two-point conversion inside the final minute, when running back Jeremy Langford was stuffed at the 2-yard-line going for the tie. Fox said there was an option to either pass or run on that play.
Jay Cutler checked to a run, but tight end Martellus Bennett apparently didn't get the signal and ran a pass route, leaving Broncos safety T.J. Ward unblocked and free to make the tackle on Langford.
"We have a lot of either/or calls in our offense, and that's regardless of where we are; whether we're backed up, out in the field, short yardage," Fox said. "The play design had two options. We went with the one option, and we didn't even execute that perfectly, which a week ago in St. Louis, a similar type situation turned into a first down. So it's just that's why they play the game, and sometimes you come up on the short end."
Fox also defended the decision to go for it on fourth-and-goal from the Denver 4-yard line with 10:10 to go in the fourth quarter, rather than kicking an easy field goal to pull within five points.
"We hadn't been very successful down there," Fox said. "You know, we kept going down and getting threes. Who knows, maybe we should have gone for it on fourth down the other times. Again, you've got to make those trips, against that kind of defense, you've got to score points."
