Fox: 0-2 Bears Beating Themselves, 'Have To Clean That Up Quickly'
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Despite starting the season 0-2, playing poorly in both games and having injuries to five key players, Bears coach John Fox believes the team has enough to turn this into a winning season.
"That's much of what I talked to them about last night," Fox told WBBM Newsradio's Josh Liss on Tuesday morning. "I think, obviously we've done things in the first two weeks that have beaten ourselves, and we have to clean that up quickly."
Perhaps more concerning than the 29-14 loss to the Eagles on Monday night were the injuries to starting quarterback Jay Cutler, linebacker Lamarr Houston, defensive lineman Eddie Goldman and defensive backs Adrian Amos and Bryce Callahan.
Cutler was taken out of the game in the third quarter after suffering a thumb injury. He was wearing a cast on his right thumb after the game. Houston left the game in the second quarter with an apparent knee injury. Goldman was carted off the field in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury. Amos and Callahan both suffered concussions.
Fox said the status for all five players in Week 3 against Dallas is still "up in the air," although he said Houston's injury was "fairly serious."
"We'll have a better idea as we prepare for practice tomorrow to go to Dallas," he said.
Fox also said he couldn't blame Cutler for trying to play through his thumb injury before he was pulled from the game when it became obvious the injury was troubling him. Backup quarterback Brian Hoyer replaced Cutler in the third quarter, with the Bears trailing 22-7, and Fox said by then, "It was a little bit too little too late."
