One Killed, Three Wounded In Humboldt Park Shooting
CHICAGO (CBS) -- One person has been killed and three others seriously wounded Wednesday afternoon in a shooting in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.
Police said the shooting happened around 12:30 p.m. near the intersection of Chicago and St. Louis avenues.
The Fire Department said two men, ages 24 and 31, were transported to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, one man, 26, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in stable condition. 23-year-old Tryis Ferguson was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died.
The four were shot inside of that was riddled by at least two dozen bullets and took place just 200 feet away from an office of the anti-violence group CeaseFire.
"It's easily 20 holes in that car. It could have easily erupted into a ball of fire…they really were trying to hurt that young ma, the individuals that were in that car," said CeaseFire manager Marilyn Pitchford.
Who they hurt, was grieving mother Catrice Ferguson, whose son was
killed in the hail of gunfire.
"I heard the shots, I heard the shots. My son was in the front, on the passenger side. Whoever the driver was, I don't know, but my son caught the majority of the bullets," she said.
Residents say the violence has been raging along Chicago Avenue for weeks, with this shooting the third murder in month in just a three block stretch.
"We can't come out of our house. We hear the shooting and we drop to the floor. We don't know who is going to get hit or where the bullets are coming from," said Antonio Velez.
The CeaseFire workers see no irony that this deadly shooting happened just outside their doors. They say this is where they most need to be.
