Four Kids, One Adult Injured In Kennedy Rollover

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A driver who may have been trying to avoid another vehicle that pulled in front of her SUV on the Kennedy Expressway Sunday morning lost control of the SUV, causing it to roll over several times. The 41-year-old driver of the SUV and her four passengers -- ages 11 to 14 -- were seriously injured in the crash.
About 9:25 a.m. an EMS Plan I response, which brings at least five ambulances to the scene, was called for the crash on the Kennedy Expressway, in the outbound lanes about 2300 North, near Armitage Avenue, according to Fire Media Affairs.
According to District Chicago Illinois State Police, the driver of the 1996 Chevrolet Blazer may have been reacting to another vehicle that pulled into her lane of traffic in front of her, but she lost control of the SUV, which then rolled over several times.
The driver, of the 3300 block of South Leavitt Street, was the most seriously injured of the five in the Blazer, according to state police. She was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she was listed in serious to critical condition, according to Fire Media Affairs.
The passengers in the SUV were a 13-year-old boy who was in the front seat, and a 14-year-old boy, a 12-year-old boy, and an 11-year-old girl, who were all in the backseat, state police said. Everyone in the Blazer were wearing their seatbelts, according to state police.
The children all lived on the 3300 block of South Leavitt, but not at the same address, according to state police.
The four children were taken to hospitals in serious to critical condition, according to Fire Media. Three were taken to Children's Memorial Hospital and one was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. According to state police the 14-year-old boy was taken to Stroger Hospital.
The ramp at Armitage and the right lane in the outbound lanes near the site of the crash remained closed to traffic for at least an hour after the accident.
