Four Homes Evacuated For Gas Main Break In West Suburb
DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (STMW) - A natural gas main broke Wednesay in west suburban Downers Grove, resulting in a road closure and the voluntary evacuation of four homes.
Nicor spokesman Richard Caragol said the utility got a call at 2:03 p.m. about a gas leak near the intersection of Belmont Road and Haddow Avenue in Downers Grove.
Responding firefighters found the ruptured four-inch gas main emitted a loud hiss, and four homes on Puffer Road were evacuated as a precaution, according to a release from the Downers Grove Fire Department.
Doug Kozlowski, communications director for the Village of Downers Grove, said the homes were voluntarily evacuated.
Belmont Road was closed between Prairie and Hitchock avenues as Nicor crews work to repair the line, Kozlowski said. The break was caused by construction at the Belmont underpass.
According to a Downers Grove Fire Department release, the break was repaired by 5:50 p.m. and residents were told they could return to their homes at 6:10 p.m. Traffic had been shut down on Belmont Road for three hours, the release said.
