Former Teacher Gets 10 years For Sex With Former Student
WHEATON, Ill. (STMW) -- A former west suburban teacher and speech team coach was sentenced to 10 years in prison Wednesday for having inappropriate sexual contact with a former student.
Edwin Klemm, 43, of the 1100 block of Howard Street in St. Charles, pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of criminal sexual assault, and Judge George Bakalis handed down the sentence, a statement from the DuPage County State's Attorney's office said.
The charges followed an investigation by the DuPage County Children's Center and Wheaton police, which found that from February 2011 through November 2011, Klemm sexually assaulted his victim, who was under 18 at the time, on multiple occasions, the statement said.
The assaults took place at multiple locations including movie theaters, public locations, Klemm's vehicle, a Wheaton North High School classroom and, on at least one occasion, Klemm's house, with his own daughter home at the time, according to prosecutors.
The assaults were discovered when the victim's parents found a love letter Klemm wrote to his victim, the statement said.
The parents contacted the Children's Center, which opened an investigation, and on March 19, Klemm was charged with the assaults. The following day, bond was set at $600,000 and he has remained in custody since.
Klemm was sentenced to five years on each count and by law they must run consecutively, and he must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole, prosecutors said. Upon release, Klemm must register as a sex offender for life.
