Former Sheriff's Deputy Sentenced For Using Excessive Force

(CBS) -- A federal judge says "what happened here was extremely serious," as she sentences a former sheriff's deputy for brutalizing a prisoner in the Maywood lockup, reports WBBM's John Cody.

Judge Maria Valdez ordered one year behind bars for former Cook County deputy sheriff Rafael Munoz who'd already beat state charges for the same incident.

"Without provocation, Deputy Munoz pulled on the ankle chain to collapse to the floor, his head his face to hit the concrete floor and he suffered serious bodily injury," said U.S. Attorney spokesman Randall Samborn.

Samborn says the 40 year old victim had exchanged words with Munoz in the lockup but the federal judge indicated that was no excuse for breaking his nose and teeth. Munoz will do one year supervised release when sentence is served and has agreed to never again take a job in law enforcement.
