Former Notre Dame Star Mirko Jurkovic Dies
(CBS) Former Notre Dame star Mirko Jurkovic has died, following a two-year battle with colon cancer, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Jurkovic died at a hospital in Mishawaka, Ind., at the age of 42.
An all-state player at Thornton Fraction North High School, he was a backup defensive tackle for Notre Dame's 1988 national championship team in his freshman year.
He later moved to guard, and played on special teams. He was an All-American and captain in his senior year.
Jurkovic was drafted by the Bears in 1992, but never played in the NFL after injuring his knee and spending his rookie season on injured reserve.
