Former Elgin Deputy Police Chief Charged With ID Theft
ST. CHARLES, Ill. (STMW) -- Elgin's former deputy police chief was indicted Tuesday for illegally accessing emails and using police resources for personal research.
A Kane County grand jury indicted Robert Beeter, 51, of Elgin, on 16 counts of felony identity theft and four counts of official misconduct, according to a statement from the Kane County State's Attorney's office.
Beeter allegedly used the personal identification information of someone he knew to access that person's email account numerous times between Aug. 11, 2010, and April 12, 2011, according to prosecutors.
The indictment also claims he accessed the Law Enforcement Agencies Data System to get information on a specific person for personal use between June 8-25, 2010, the state's attorney's office said.
Beeter was deputy chief of the Elgin Police Department during all the alleged crimes.
Bond was set at $25,000 and a warrant was issued for Beeter's arrest. He was taken into custody by Jo Daviess County Sheriff's deputies about 2 p.m. and released after posting $2,500 bond, the state's attorney's office said. He will be back in court at 9 am. on June 12.
If convicted, Beeter faces up to five years in prison.
