Former College Basketball Star Robbed, Pistol-Whipped In South Loop Condo
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A high school and college basketball star was pistol-whipped and robbed in the middle of the day Monday at his South Loop condo.
Adebayo Akinkunle, 37, was robbed of a Range Rover and more than $100,000 in various items – including a closet safe, a wallet, credit cards and cell phones – the robbers struck his condo in the 700 block of South Financial Place, in Printer's Row, according to a Chicago Tribune account.
The robbery happened around 3 p.m. Monday.
Akinkunkle was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital after the robbers broke his nose, cut his left wrist, and also cut the left side of his head to the point where he required stitches, the Tribune reported.
A shell casing was found at the scene, but no one was reported shot, the Tribune reported.
Akinkunle told police he did not know the men who robbed him, the newspaper reported.
Akinkunle was a standout player Morgan Park High School, and went on to play at Bradley University in Peoria during the 1990s. He was the lead scorer for the Bradley Braves as a senior, and led the team to three postseason appearances, the Tribune reported.
He entered the NBA draft in 1998, but went undrafted and instead played overseas, the newspaper reported.
