Former Bensenville Cop Charged With Stealing Gasoline While On Duty
(STMW) -- A former northwest suburban police officer is facing felony theft and official misconduct charges for allegedly stealing gasoline from village-owned pumps while on duty.
Prosecutors claim Bensenville officer David E. Irving kept gas cans in the back of his squad car, and filled them up from a village gas pump on at least three different occasions, according to the DuPage County state's attorney's office.
Irving would use the gas to fill his personal vehicle, prosecutors claim. Authorities allege the thefts took place over a week's period in September.
Irving, 35, of Roscoe, a village north of Rockford in Winnebago County, is charged with one count of theft of governmental property under $500 and two counts of official misconduct, all felonies, the state's attorney's office said.
Other members of the police department noticed Irving's unusual behavior, and reported it to police administration, according to the state's attorney's office. Bensenville police then conducted an investigation and turned over results to prosecutors.
Irving turned himself in to authorities Wednesday afternoon after a $75,000 warrant was issued, the state's attorney's office said.
