Former Bellwood Village Administrator Accused Of Stealing $500,000
BELLWOOD, Ill. (CBS) -- A former administrator of west suburban Bellwood has been charged with stealing more than half a million dollars from the village.
As WBBM Newsradio's Nancy Harty reports, Roy McCampbell earned $472,000 a year working for the Village of Bellwood. He held 10 different jobs at once – everything from mayor assistant to property commission director, according to a Chicago Tribune report.
McCampbell, 57, told the Tribune in 2010 that he had earned every penny of his salary. But a grand jury indictment says otherwise, accusing him of theft and official misconduct.
He is accused of stealing more than $500,000 from the village, in part by manipulating is own employment contracts and misleading the Village Board about his own work, the Tribune reported.
The village sued McCampbell for fraud last year after an internal investigation, and turned over the results of the investigation to the Cook County State's Attorney's office, the Tribune reported.
McCampbell's attorney says his client is being made a political scapegoat and has done nothing wrong, the Tribune reported.
McCampbell is due in court next Tuesday.
