Former Bears Lobby For Chicago Super Bowl

CHICAGO (CBS/WBBM) -- With Super Bowl fever revving up, two former Chicago Bears said Saturday that it would be great to host the big game at Soldier Field.

As WBBM's Mary Frances Bragiel reports, Bruce Harin, who played for the Bears from 1978 to 1983, said the city's Super Bowl hosting duties are long overdue.

"I mean, we've got the hotel situation here, I mean we've got transportation and we've got the backing of the people of the city of Chicago," Harin said.

Mayoral candidate Gery Chico has proposed bringing the game to Chicago in 2015, a year after the game will be played in New York.

But critics say Soldier Field would need a dome to be considered for a Super Bowl, not to mention more seats.

Capacity at Soldier Field currently stands at 61,500. The NFL requires a minimum of 70,000 seats for a stadium to host the Super Bowl.

Former Bear Steve McMichael said that enough public support will drive home the idea, given how much money a Super Bowl could mean for the city.

"I'm talking about billions (of dollars) here, having a Super Bowl here in town," McMichael said.
