Former Bear Rashaan Salaam Sells Off Heisman Ring
DENVER (CBS) -- Former Bears running back and Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan Salaam has sold his Heisman ring for $8,140, an auction house says.
Nate D. Sanders Auctions says bidding reached $10,835 before the auction closed Tuesday evening but didn't reach the $15,000 reserve. Nate Sanders says the company then backtracked to find a buyer. The ring has several diamonds but was missing one.
Salaam didn't return a phone message seeking comment from The Associated Press.
He played for the University of Colorado at Boulder from 1992 to 1994. Salaam rushed for a school record 2,055 yards as a junior to win the Heisman in 1994.
The Bears made him a first-round draft pick, and he had 1,074 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns in his rookie season before encountering problems with injuries. While highly touted upon his arrival, Salaam ultimately spent just three seasons with the Bears, and one more with Cleveland in 1999-2000.
