Foggy Morning To Give Way To Rainy Afternoon, Stormy Thursday
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Dense fog blanketed much of the lakefront in the Chicago area Wednesday morning, and thunderstorms could bring heavy rain and large hail to the area Wednesday night and Thursday.
The National Weather Service said moist air from winds out of the east was producing dense fog across the Lake Michigan shore Wednesday morning, which likely will limit visibility to less than a mile through the morning, possibly until 11 a.m.
Though the fog should clear before the afternoon, thunderstorms could fire up later in the day, bringing heavy rain, lightning, and hail up to the size of pennies, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will remain cool, reaching a high of only about 47.
The threat of storms and hail continue into Thursday as temperatures soar to a high of about 70. There is an enhanced risk of severe storms for the Chicago area, and most of Illinois on Thursday, particularly in the afternoon and evening. If the right conditions come together, tornadoes could be possible in some areas.
On Wednesday, there is only a marginal or slight risk of severe weather for the Chicago area, with greater risk for large storms downstate, and west into Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma.
Conditions will dry out on Friday, and stay that way through the weekend, though temperatures will get significantly cooler than Thursday; topping out in the mid 50s on Friday and Saturday, and around 60 on Sunday.
