UPDATED 10/04/11 11:17 a.m.
WILMINGTON, Ill. (CBS) -- Two separate crashes involving multiple vehicles on Interstate 55 in Will County, leaving several people seriously injured.
As CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports, it all started with a rollover crash on northbound I-55 near Lorenzo Road during the morning rush. The driver of a semi-trailer truck was injured, and shutting down the expressway.
That led to a backup that extended all the way south to the Kankakee River bridge near Blodgett Road. There was another crash in the traffic jam, involving at least seven semi-trailer trucks and a host of other vehicles – at least 10 vehicles in total.
That crash happened in a fog bank that formed along the river.
Numerous people were sent to the hospital, but no facilities were reported.
Vehicles were being allowed to pass by 11 a.m., with the damaged vehicles set off to the side.
