Firefighters Rescue Squatter From Burning Building
CHICAGO (STMW) - Firefighters rescued a squatter from a burning building Thursday morning on the Southwest Side.
The fire started about 7:30 p.m. in a 2-1/2 story frame house at 4022 W. 16th St., according to the Chicago Fire Department.
A squatter was rescued from the burning building and was being examined on the scene, but did not appear to have any medical issues, the fire department said.
A firefighter suffered a minor injury while fighting the fire but is in good condition, the department said.
Nobody else was inside the building and nobody else was hurt.
The blaze, which was elevated to a still-and-box alarm, was controlled about 10 minutes later, the fire department said.
The fire is believed to have been accidental, and caused by smoking materials. Officials believe the squatter may have initially lit a fire to keep warm in the building.
