Firefighters Drive By Building, Discover Fire
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago firefighters smelled smoke as they drove past an apartment building in the South Side's Auburn-Gresham neighborhood overnight, and they jumped into action in the bitter cold.
The fire broke out in a three-story apartment building at 8026 S. Paulina St. started in the rear of a second floor unit, Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said.
Crews responded shortly before 1:30 a.m. The building was being rehabbed and vacant at the time, Langford said.
Firefighters needed extra companies to bring in water from the next block, after finding the fire hydrants at the scene frozen.
The flames also threatened to spread to an occupied three-story apartment building across a gangway from the vacant building, but firefighters were able to keep the blaze contained, Langford said.
No one was injured in the fire, the cause of which was under investigation Friday morning, he said.
