Firefighters Extinguish Building Fire In Bucktown
Updated 1/27/11 6:46 a.m.
CHICAGO (CBS) - Chicago firefighters had their hands full overnight, when a building went up in flames on busy Milwaukee Avenue in the Bucktown neighborhood.
The fire was reported about 9 p.m. Wednesday in a one-story building commercial at 1896 N. Milwaukee Ave., but was soon elevated to a 2-11 alarm, Fire Media Affairs Chief Kevin MacGregor said.
The blaze was extinguished by about midnight and nobody was injured, a Shakespeare District police lieutenant said.
The building had been a working facility belonging to Eurosonic Blinds and Shutters, where window blinds are cleaned and stored for consumers.
But a for-sale sign was recently posted on the exterior wall of the building.
The fire was showing from the back of the building, and firefighters worked to ensure the fire did not spread to any surrounding buildings, MacGregor said.
A vintage brick building containing apartments and the All-Star Pet Care center is located to the north of the building. A modern condo tower is located to the south.
Firefighters fought the blaze defensively, and no firefighters were able to go inside or on the roof, MacGregor said.
The building is near the Western Blue Line CTA station, although the fire did not affect travel and did not require the transit agency to shut off power, MacGregor said.
The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
