Firefighters Battle Extra-Alarm Blaze In North Lawndale
Updated 09/25/13 - 2:36 p.m.
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Fire Department crews continue to battle dense smoke as they fight a two-alarm fire in a North Lawndale warehouse Wednesday afternoon on the West Side.
The blaze, reported just after noon, is in the basement of a five-story warehouse that used to be a furniture company at 1034 S. Kostner Ave., according to Fire Media Affairs.
Workers were removing a tank when "flammable contents" ignited, according to Fire Media. No injuries have been reported as of 1:45 p.m.
According to Fire Media, an "unknown substance" is burning inside, though the structure itself is not on fire.
Dense smoke coming out of the building forced firefighters to use a mobile ventilation unit to clear the smoke by pressure, according to Fire Media.
Fire crews using "extended time air bottles" eventually entered the building to discover the source of the fire, and are now re-entering to try to extinguish it, Fire Media reported about 1:45 p.m.
