CICERO (STMW) -- Two firefighters were injured while battling an extra-alarm blaze Saturday afternoon in an apartment building in west suburban Cicero.
The fire began about 1:30 p.m. at 5927 W. 35th St. in a building that includes eight apartments and six storefronts. It was then raised to a 2-11 alarm, according to town spokesman Ray Hanania. The fire began in an upstairs apartment.
Two firemen suffered minor injuries and were taken to an area hospital, Hanania said. One fireman injured his hip and back and the other injured his knee.
Fifteen residents of the building were safely evacuated, Hanania said. The building is not inhabitable and those displaced will either stay with family members or the town will pay for their hotel accommodations.
The fire was extinguished about 5 p.m. and firefighters continue to put out hot spots, Hanania said.
There is no indication of arson but Cicero fire officials had not yet determined a cause of the fire, Hanania said.
