Fire Extinguished In Arlington Heights Apartment Building
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (STMW) -- Firefighters evacuated an apartment building in unincorporated Arlington Heights Friday afternoon where a fire was found in one of the units.
Firefighters arrived at the building, 2296 Nichols Road, at 1:05 p.m. after receiving a call reporting a "burning odor" coming from one of the apartments, a release from the Long Grove Fire Department said.
No one answered the door to the apartment, causing firefighters to force their way inside, the release said.
A small fire was discovered in a bedroom and was extinguished, the release said, adding that a garbage can, clothing in a laundry basket and carpeting were found on fire in the apartment.
A fire investigation determined that heat from the fire was so severe that it caused blinds, ceiling fans, light fixtures, electronic equipment and paintings on the walls to melt, the release said. It is believed that the fire ran out of oxygen and was returning to a smoldering stage when firefighters arrived, the release said.
No one was found in the apartment during the fire, and the people who lived in the apartment returned while firefighters were on the scene, the release said. Temporary housing for the occupants—described as a woman with teenage children—was arranged by fire personnel and the American Red Cross, the release said.
The fire department estimates $65,000 worth of damage from the fire.
Long Grove firefighters received help from fire departments from Buffalo Grove, Lake Zurich and Palatine.
