Fire Destroys Two Homes In Plainfield
PLAINFIELD, Ill. (CBS) -- A fire erupted at a home in southwest suburban Plainfield on Wednesday, then spread to a neighboring home, destroying both houses.
CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports no one was hurt when the fire broke out near Rolf Road and Plainsman Circle, but two homes were lost in the blaze.
The affected homeowners and neighbors stood silently afterward, staring at the devastation. Even after the fire was out, firefighters stayed on the scene to make sure the fire didn't spark up again, or spread to any other homes.
Neighbors said all they could see was a wall of flames when the first house started burning around 6 p.m. on Wednesday. A resident in that home apparently heard a noise, then found his porch totally engulfed in flames, so he fled from the house.
When it was over, all that was left was the fireplace.
Officials were preparing to turn off the gas, which was still burning.
The woman who lives next door to the house that caught fire said high winds pushed the flames to her garage, destroying it, and gutting the home she's lived in for 26 years. But she's still in good spirits.
"My thing was I'm having a graduation party on Saturday for 70 people, for my daughter's graduation from the (University of Illinois). So, now we'll have a cookout," Cathy Kazak said.
She said her cat died in the fire, but she's fortunate her family wasn't home.
Fire officials said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
