Fire Destroys House In West Pullman

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A fire broke out Tuesday on the city's Far South Side, causing a home to collapse and sending a billow of thick smoke into the air.
As CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports, no injuries were reported in the fire at 12031 S. Indiana Ave., at the southeast corner of Indiana Avenue and 120th Place, in the West Pullman neighborhood.
But the fire caused a plume of smoke so thick and voluminous that it formed a cloud over much of the Far South Side.
The structure collapsed early on in the fire. The intense fire burned through all the supports of the load-bearing walls, and the home fell like a house of cards, Habermehl said.
Firefighters battled the blaze in defensive mode from outside, as conditions were too dangerous to enter the house. All firefighters and civilians were away from the burning building as of 6 a.m., and everyone was accounted for, Habermehl reported.
Staging for the fire was at 119th Street and Michigan Avenue, Habermehl reported.
A recent Google Maps image shows a frame house under major renovation at the address where the fire broke out.
The cause and origin of the fire remained unknown at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.
