Fire Destroys Home In Historic Section Of Dolton

DOLTON, Ill. (CBS) -- An eyesore now plagues the historic section of south suburban Dolton, after a fire ripped through a home on Kanawha Street.

As WBBM Newsradio's Michele Fiore reports, the single-story brick bungalow at 13925 Kanawha St. caught fire in the rear just after noon Sunday, when neighbors say the family that lived there was at church.

The house is just a few blocks from the Dolton fire station.

Dolton fire Lt. Bob Kapusta said it was a stubborn fire that reached to the roof.

Fire officials had to call for extra alarms because of some complicating factors. Kapusta says winds out of the north and exposure on both sides of the home were a few reasons why they decides to pull their firefighters out of the building and fight the flames from the exterior, and that was fortunate.

"Fortunately, everybody that was at the fire scene went home happy; all parts are connected," he said.

Part of the home later collapsed.

Kapusta said he is not sure of the exact age of the home, but it is in a historic area of Dolton.

"The area where this fire was is what we call the Valley. There are older homes in that particular area; some of the first homes built, I believe, in Dolton, before my time," he said.

Kapusta says it appears the fire started at the rear of the home, but it could take some time to determine the exact cause and origin of the fire since much of the home has been burned.

No one was injured.
