Reported Fire At Willis Tower A False Alarm
UPDATED 04/29/11 1:18 p.m.
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Fire crews rushed to the Willis Tower Friday morning, but reports of a fire and smoke turned out to be unfounded.
Several Fire Department rigs and about 50 firefighters were dispatched to the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere – known until 2009 as the Sears Tower. As of about noon, there were also a dozen police cars responding, mostly for traffic control, according to police.
Firefighters responded to the skyscraper after someone called to say they smelled something possibly burning, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis.
Crews checked the building but report of smoke was unfounded and there was no fire, Rosado said. Crews were leaving the scene as of 12:25 p.m.
A Central District police lieutenant said earlier that a light fixture was possibly burning on the 6th floor.
