15 Displaced In South Austin Fire

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Fifteen people were displaced when a fire ripped through an apartment building early Thursday in the South Austin neighborhood.
Fire crews arrived at 5150 W. Huron St. shortly after 6 a.m. and encountered flames on the first floor of a two-story brick apartment building, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze at 6:42 a.m., Rosado said. No injuries were reported.
Rosado said 15 people told firefighters on the scene that they live in the building, but it was not immediately known how many people were inside the building at the time of the blaze. Those fifteen will be displaced.
Rosado did not know the building was equipped with smoke detectors.
American Red Cross spokeswoman Martha Carlos said the organization was contacted at 8 a.m.
"We have two disaster relief workers on the scene,'' Carlos said. "They are meeting with people to figure out who might need help.''
The cause of the fire remained under investigation Thursday morning, according to Rosado.
