Fire Breaks Out In Far South Side Factory
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A fire broke out early Monday in a factory on the city's Far South Side, just west of the Bishop Ford Freeway.
No one was injured.
Police and fire crews responded to the blaze at 1001 E. 103rd St. around 1:26 a.m., a Calumet District lieutenant said. Nearby roads were blocked off.
The Imperial Zinc factory takes up the block where the fire broke out. The company produces zinc anodes and alloys, which are used to protect metal from corrosion.
The fire was extinguished at 2:17 a.m., said Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado.
A Level I Hazmat response and still-and-box alarm were called as a precaution, Rosado said, since there were potentially hazardous chemicals in the factory.
