Fire Breaks Out In Englewood Two-Flat
UPDATED 04/20/11 6:21 a.m.
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A fire broke out Wednesday morning in a two-flat home in the Englewood neighborhood.
As CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports, the fire started sometime before 6 a.m. in the basement of the building at 6417 S. Justine St., just east of Ashland Avenue.
The fire began in the basement, but crawled up the walls into the void space under the roof, and soon, the whole building was ablaze.
As of just after 6 a.m., firefighters were on the roof, cutting a hole to ventilate the superheated gases and cool the building, so that a hose team could enter the building safely and fight the fire.
A still-and-box alarm was called for the fire to get in extra personnel.
By 6:19 a.m., the fire was out. But the occupants of the home had lost many possessions.
There were no reports of injuries. The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation.
