Fine Cut In Notre Dame Student Accident
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (CBS) -- The University of Notre Dame has reached a settlement that cuts the fine imposed on the school after a student died in an accident during football practice.
Declan Sullivan was killed when a hydraulic lift he was atop blew over in a 53 mph wind gust while he was filming practice last fall.
The university has agreed to pay a $42,000 fine and make a substantial contribution to a memorial to settle a complaint that it committed six safety violations that led to the accident.
The settlement announced Friday also requires Notre Dame to launch a nationwide education program directed at other schools about the hazards of the outdoor use of scissor lifts.
Sullivan, 20, from Long Grove, died in the accident on Oct. 27.
The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration originally said it was fining Notre Dame $77,500. The settlement reduces a "knowing" violation to a "serious" violation.
