Fight Over Song At Bar Leads To Shooting; Cop Returns Fire
CHICAGO (CBS) -- An off-duty Chicago Police officer returned fire at a man who shot his friend overnight, after a fight that stemmed from a song someone wanted a DJ at a bar to play.
Two men were in custody Tuesday in connection to the incident in the 7500 block of South Wabash Avenue in the Park Manor neighborhood, police said.
It all started when a patron at Willa's Fifty Yard Line, 69 E. 75th St., kept asking a DJ over and over again when he was going to play a certain song. Eventually, the patron found himself punched in the nose, Gresham District Police Lt. Paula Schmeer said.
Outside the bar, the son of the patron who was punched allegedly tried to shoot the DJ, but instead accidentally hit another man, who was standing next to the DJ, according to the lieutenant.
The man who was shot was with a friend who happened to be an off-duty Chicago Police officer. The officer returned fire at the gunman, but did not strike anyone, police said.
The suspects ran south on Wabash Avenue, but the officer chased them and captured them a short time later, according to the lieutenant. One of the men was reportedly hiding in a garbage can.
Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said the shooter and another man were both taken into custody.
The man who was shot was taken to an area hospital in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the shoulder, Greer said. His injury is not thought to be life-threatening, she said.
