Fight Erupts At High School After Theft Of Cannabis
RIVERSIDE, Ill. (STMW) -- A high school student was arrested Friday after a school fight due to him allegedly stealing cannabis from another student's home.
Officers responded at 12:20 p.m. to Riverside Brookfield High School after school staff had to break up a fight between two students, Riverside police said.
The fight was due to student Armando Marentes, 18, allegedly entering through a window of the second student's home in the 0-100 block of Lawton Road in Riverside and stealing a quarter pound of cannabis and electronic equipment earlier in the week, Riverside police said.
Once the second student, a 16-year-old boy, learned of the burglary, he confronted Marentes during school hours, Riverside police said.
Police recovered shoes at Marente's home that matched shoe impressions left in the snow during the burglary, Riverside police said. The evidence was submitted to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
Marentes, of North Riverside, was charged with residential burglary and disorderly conduct, Riverside police said.
The 16-year-old boy, of Riverside was charged with disorderly conduct, Riverside police said.
"These drug rip-offs are becoming more and more common and have the potential to be very violent," Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel stated. "Once most victims realize that they've been burglarized by an offender who steals their drugs, the victim will retaliate against that offender at a later date."
Police are continuing their investigation as more suspects may be involved in the burglary.
