Driver Killed In Fiery Crash On Route 53
UPDATED 07/12/12 10:24 a.m.
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (CBS) -- A fiery crash left a driver dead, and shut down multiple lanes of Route 53 in the Schaumburg corridor early Thursday.
CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports on northbound Route 53 just south of Golf Road at 5:38 a.m., a driver failed to negotiate the lane between the local and express lanes.
The driver's red Acura plowed into the barrier wall that splits the local and express lanes, and the car caught fire.
The driver was the only person in the car. He was trapped in the vehicle and was burned so severely that his identity could not immediately be determined, Illinois State Police told the Sun-Times Media Wire.
A blue plastic tarp was placed over the car after the accident, indicating that the driver had died.
As of 6 a.m., only the far left express lane and the far right local lane on northbound Route 53 remained open. Another express lane reopened about half an hour later, but lanes were still closed as late as 9 a.m.
