Festival Commemorating Great Chicago Fire To Feature Flammable Houses Floating On Chicago River

(CBS) -- It was a day like all days on the Chicago River with kayaks, ducks, sightseeing boats and a barge hauling three story book mansions destined to be burned down this Saturday night.

WBBM's John Cody reports as the tug slowly pushed the mansions to their new and final homes on the river, Jim Lasco, the artistic director of Redmoon Theater and Performance Company, explained what's to remain after the homes are torched Saturday night.

"You can kind of see these little towers peeking out of the tops of two of the three buildings and those are involved in what gets revealed after the fire burns the wood structure away."

Lasco says the Chicago Fire Festival will start with flame pouring from the Chicago River bridges into cauldrons that'll set the homes ablaze as a memorial to the Great Chicago Fire.
