Fergie Jenkins Honored With Stamp
Cubs Great Honored In Native Canada
OTTAWA, Ont. Baseball Hall of Famer Ferguson "Fergie" Jenkins is getting his own stamp for his 68th birthday.
The pitcher watched on Monday as Canada Post conducted a print run of stamps bearing his image that will commemorate Black History Month in February.
He is the only Canadian inducted into Cooperstown, compiling a 3.34 ERA and 284-226 record over 19 seasons with the Phillies, Cubs, Rangers and Red Sox.
The stamp depicts a young Jenkins on the pitcher's mound with the Cubs, set behind a photo of Jenkins on the Canadian Walk of Fame in Toronto in 2001.
Jenkins said the stamp provides a bookend to a major league career in which his image was appeared on a baseball card in 1965.
Jenkins played for the Cubs from 1967 to 1973, and again from 1982 to 1983. He led the Cubs with 20 wins in 1967, and the Cubs improved 28 games over their last-place finish the year before. He won 20 or more games for the next five seasons with the Cubs, and led the National League in strikeouts in 1969, with 273.
In 1971, Jenkins set a hitting record for a Cubs pitcher, with six home runs and 20 RBIs. His 13 career home runs are among the best records for a pitcher in Major League history, according to the Cubs' official website.
