Feds Nab Suspected 'Black Cap Bandit'

(STMW) -- The FBI has nabbed the "Black Cap Bandit," a man accused of robbing at least five banks in the Chicago area.

Roderick V. Burton was taken into federal custody Tuesday, according to a statement from the FBI. Authorities say the 48-year-old robbed a TCF Bank at 3570 N. Elston on Dec. 31, 2014 in the Irving Park neighborhood on the North Side.

Described as a serial bank robber by the FBI, Burton earned his moniker by wearing a black cap during a string of bank robberies that occurred between September and December 2014, the FBI said. He is accused of robbing banks in Chicago, Oak Lawn, Burbank and Calumet City, the Sun-Times previously reported.

Burton, of the 6700 block of South Emerald, is charged with one count of bank robbery, the FBI said.

He was ordered held pending his next court appearance, which is scheduled for June 11.
