Feds Launch Latest Raid In Body-Parts Probe
(CBS) -- Federal agents on Thursday removed more body parts from a suburban crematorium -- the facility believed to be involved in a multi-state investigation of companies that collect specimens for research.
CBS 2's Brad Edwards saw bag after bag being loaded onto a refrigeration truck from Cremation Services Inc. in Schiller Park. The feds' evidence team in protective suits collected the bodies and body parts and loaded them into a number of units.
It was a culmination of a sweeping raid that occurred there Tuesday and at a sister business -- Biological Resource Center in Rosemont, a body, organ, tissue donation organization.
It's part of a national, year-long FBI investigation that started in Detroit and stretches to Arizona and Nevada. The allegation: that body parts ended up on the black market.
An attorney for the raided companies here says the investigation focuses on two former businesses and that the local owners are cooperating with authorities.
"Biological Resource Center of Illinois remains committed to continuing to serve our donor-families and clients with the highest level of integrity and standard of care, as we have done over the last two decades," attorney M. David Weisman said.
