FBI Probes Death Of Indiana Baby On Caribbean Cruise Ship
MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (CBS) -- The FBI is looking into the death of a newborn baby after an Indiana woman apparently gave birth on a cruise ship in the Caribbean.
An employee of the Carnival Dream ship found the baby in a guest cabin on Oct. 12 while the ship was docked in St. Maarten, according to the FBI.
The FBI office in Merrillville, Ind., is investigating because the baby was born in international waters and the mother is from northwest Indiana.
Officials have not yet determined the cause of death, but authorities are investigating the baby's mother, a 20-year-old woman from northwest Indiana, according to a news release from the FBI. The woman's name is not being released.
The baby's death was reported to Dutch authorities in St. Maarten after the body was found. Dutch authorities took custody of the baby's body and the mother was questioned in St. Maarten, but has since returned to the U.S.
The FBI would not release further details, saying the investigation into the cause and manner of death of the newborn are ongoing.
