Police Question Father Of Girl Slain In 2008

CHICAGO (WBBM) -- The father of a nine-year-old girl murdered in summer 2008 is being questioned by police, the father's attorney has told Newsradio 780.

The body of Mya Lyons, who was stabbed to death, was found in an alley near the 8400 block of Gilbert Court in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood in July 2008.

Mya lived with her mother, Ericka Barnes, and younger brother, Omary Spraggins, in west suburban Addison and spent part of her summers with her father, Richard Lyons, on the South Side, relatives said.

Richard Lyons' attorney, Alan Blumenthal, tells Newsradio 780 that the father was taken by police to Area 2 headquarters for questioning on Monday.

"If there are any charges, they have not yet been approved by the State's Attorney's felony review," Blumenthal says.

Chicago Police have not been able to confirm that detectives are interviewing anyone in connection with the murder case.

Mya's relatives previously said police told them Mya was slashed in the neck and abdomen and had been sexually assaulted.
