CHICAGO (CBS) — An 80-year-old man was shot and killed inside a car on Chicago's South Side on Wednesday morning.

Just after 10 a.m., Chicago police said the man was sitting inside a car in the 1400 block of W. 90th St when another vehicle approached.

Police said someone got out of the vehicle and fired shots, hitting the victim in the head and back. A witness said he heard approximately six gunshots.

The man was taken to Christ Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The victim was identified by family as James Stroud. They say he had just retired and was beginning to enjoy his time off from work. They say the family was heartbroken to learn that he was taken away from them.

"I was confused. It looked just like his car, then I was worried, he wasn't answering. And (then) I find out it was him," James Stroud Jr., the victim's son, said. "I just can't understand. We just went to the doctor, had a checkup, and everything was pretty much OK."

The father and son had just spoken Tuesday night. On Wednesday, James Stroud Jr.'s wife sent him a photo of his father's car with bullet holes in the driver's side window.

"Whoever did it, I hope that justice is served, because my dad was a good guy. That was cowardly, whoever did that, very cowardly," James Stroud Jr. said.

Now family members are grieving and working on planning his memorial.

Meanwhile, no arrests have been made. Police are still investigating.
